Welcome to #FabulousFridays as we pay tribute to wellness, creativity, and the power of art, music and poetry to ignite our hearts and minds. The goal? Nurturing communities of happy higher-performance, balance, enjoyment and authentic leadership.
Today, I’m sharing a piece that embodies my passion: Astor Piazzolla’s Fuga y Misterio.
Piazzolla, like Bach, was a master of the Fugue.
A fugue is a musical composition characterized by a structured, intricate interplay of voices. It is built upon a central theme, called the subject, which is introduced at the beginning and then developed through interwoven, repeating lines of counterpoint. Each voice enters at different times, creating a layered, harmonious conversation.
Key Features of a Fugue
Exposition – The subject is introduced in one voice and imitated in others.
Development – The subject is transformed, inverted, or varied as voices interact.
Counterpoint – Independent melodic lines move together in a complex, interdependent structure.
Climax & Resolution – The piece reaches a point of tension and resolves harmonically.
Beyond Music
The term fugue has also been used metaphorically in psychology and literature to describe a state of fragmentation, escape, or intricate thought patterns. For example, a "fugue state" in psychology refers to a dissociative condition where a person temporarily loses awareness of their identity.
Connection to Leadership & Communication
A fugue mirrors high-level strategic communication and leadership. Just as voices in a fugue must align yet maintain individuality, great leaders harmonize diverse perspectives, balancing structure with adaptability—creating resonance, not just noise.
Astor Piazzolla redefines the traditional Tango by blending classical fugue with the raw soul of Argentina.
Like Bach before him, Piazzolla mastered counterpoint—a delicate interplay of multiple voices. Each instrument in his compositions sings with clarity and purpose, yet they all weave together into a harmonious whole.
It’s a lesson we as leaders can take to heart:
Listen to every voice. Honor the individual but lead the collective forward.
In Piazzolla's work, there is a mystery—just as in leadership—where not every note is predictable, but each step builds momentum.
As leaders, we must embrace the unpredictable and still create order from complexity. We are not just managers of tasks—we are composers of significance.
Astor Piazzolla's Lesson for Leaders:
1. Creativity flourishes when we dare to challenge the norm—whether in business or art.
2. True innovation happens when you integrate tradition with modernity.
3. Just like his Tango Nuevo, leadership must blend the structured (strategy) with the passionate (people).
I leave you a thought from another favorite poet, Pablo Neruda. May both Piazzolla and Neruda inspire your #WeekendOfWellness.
“You can cut all the flowers but you cannot keep spring from coming…All rivers return to the sea; all dreams are born again.”
No matter the obstacles, the spring of your creativity is inevitable.
Keep leading, keep creating!
